Dave,
You are spot on with your article.
This is the time for courageous individuals to "Lead Up" and offer innovative ideas in open and honest conversations AND have those in the C-suite encourage and welcome them.

Excellent thoughts, Dave! I so, so agree. I am very concerned about the lack of strategy...especially inclusive strategy--during these trying times. There seems to be a mad dash at the tactical level, in hopes of saving the ships...stakeholders running in many different directions. It is such an opportune time to pull people together and re-visit the vision.....restore the values and even ponder the mission..and start actions that contribute to all three. There is something woefully archaic about the way we are doing business as usual......it is hardly usual anymore. I especially like your description..."Move away from the meetings in which an audience watches senior executives behind podiums giving updates and focusing attention on all the problems we’re worrying about." This action is about as dated and uncomfortable as it gets....and our Gen Xers and Gen Yers just don't respect such self-serving nonsense. Talent is confused about their roles in this economic climate. Our leaders might help make these roles very clear...and even ask talent to help in this discussion. Great article...made me think...and I will pass it on! Thanks!

Dave: Great article. Leadership by fear can be effective (though I don't encourage it) in short bursts, but I have also seen employees that are so beaten down right now by negative messages they couldn't brainstorm a new possibility if they had to. It's ironic that at the very moment companies have the time to enroll employees by asking for creating ideas they are instead telling them to go down in the storm cellar and start stocking canned goods. What motivates us all is hope. I'm not talking about pie-in-the-sky or lemon tree hopes, I'm talking about the chance to talk about where we are going rather than regret where we've been. You're right on target. Thank you!
