Jane :One of my all time favorite quotes (and I have many) is: Your character is what you do, when nobody is watching. It can apply to leadership too. The 17-year old leader chose to be the light and whether he knew it or not at the time, his integrity was on trial. At a young age, he’s already demonstrated and exemplified what more mature people have not mastered. Telling the truth, no matter what the consequence is always the only right thing to do. Max Depree in his book titled Leadership Is An Art asks the question, “Do your employees walk around like they own the place? They should!” We should all keep in mind that intentional honesty in every walk of life, work or social, is at the heart of an ethical, strong, sustaining culture – economically, environmentally, and all other aspects. When you sow wheat, you don’t get a field of corn. When you sow deceit – what do you think you get?

I agree, Mike -- great story. Good job, also, Jennifer, standing back and letting the teen make his own decision. Had you intervened or given more guidance, his decision would have lacked the impact that it had.

Jennifer,

This is a great story. Thanks for sharing. I once had a company car and became aware of under-reporting my personal use. I was concerned because I thought that when I corrected it, my co-workers that were using the same methods might be in jeopardy of an audit. I reported my error and corrected what I owed to the IRS and no one else ended up getting audited. While not very dramatic, I was just glad that policing myself didn't cost anyone else. Some "miracles" are just the absence of disaster.

Thanks for the great post. Mike...
