Independence Day and Gratitude

American flags lining suburban street

Every summer just before our nation’s Independence Day holiday, they appear like magic –  little American flags planted along the treelawns of our street. They proudly stand street-side sentinal for a few days, then once again vanish until the next year.

It’s the handiwork of our neighbors; a patriotic gesture that visually unites the homes in our neighborhood in celebration of our country. I’m grateful to live in a corner of the world where it’s OK to show one’s patriotism.

Yes, our country has flaws. What  country doesn’t?

But I still consider myself immensely fortunate to live here.
Happy Birthday, America.
